YOUR GUIDE TO THE BEST
OUTDOOR TRADITIONAL SAUNA
An outdoor traditional sauna is a wonderful way to relax. To get your own outdoor sauna, you can either build the sauna yourself, convert an existing building into a sauna, or purchase a pre-built sauna that you assemble yourself.
For the purposes of this article, we will cover everything there is to know about outdoor traditional saunas and provide some recommendations for purchasing pre-built ones that you can easily assemble yourself.

How Does a Traditional Outdoor Sauna Work?
Traditional saunas give users a more authentic feel during their session. Their build and function is quite similar to the first saunas that started it all. These types of saunas work by using an electric, gas-powered, or wood-burning heat source topped with sauna stones. The heated sauna stones transfer heat to the entire sauna room.
When you pour water on the stones, it creates bursts of steam adding to the temperature and humidity. These saunas have a more authentic feel and are very similar to how saunas have been used for centuries.
While others might use steam generators or infrared heaters (with no steam) traditional saunas still use water and sauna stones. This is where the phrase “traditional sauna” comes from.

What’s the Difference Between Traditional Outdoor Saunas and Infrared Saunas?
Here we will explain the key elements that make a traditional outdoor sauna “traditional,” and how it differs from infrared saunas.
Heating Method
Outdoor Traditional Saunas:
-
Heats the surrounding air and warms the entire sauna room
-
Operates at higher temperatures than infrared saunas – outdoor traditional sauna rooms can reach a temperature of 185 degrees Fahrenheit and above
-
Focus is on making you sweat by exposure to high heat
Infrared Saunas:
-
Heats the body directly instead of the room
-
Uses a wavelength of light to bring heat directly to your body
-
Typical temperatures are usually between 120 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit
-
Also causes intense sweating, but at a lower temperature
Humidity Levels
Outdoor Traditional Saunas:
-
Because it includes the ability to make steam, outdoor traditional saunas operate with higher humidity levels
-
Steam helps to open pores and shed dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells
-
Promotes less congestion and improves blood circulation
Infrared Saunas:
-
Cannot be used to make steam, so operates with lower humidity levels
-
Offers other health benefits (like relieving muscle soreness and arthritis) but not due to steam

The Best Outdoor Infrared Sauna
Sun Home Luminar™ Outdoor 5-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna
You’ve probably heard of an outdoor traditional sauna. Sun Home now offers an outdoor infrared sauna, a unique type of sauna that mimics the experience of being in a luxurious spa. The only difference is that you can access this “spa” right in your backyard.
Every bit futuristic and hi-tech as its name suggests, this Sun Home sauna is the first outdoor infrared sauna with 10 full-spectrum heaters. It can comfortably accommodate up to five people.
So, what makes this sauna so special?
This sauna provides you access to all three types of infrared wavelengths:
-
Near
-
Mid
-
Far
Each of these wavelengths determines the extent to which the heat of the infrared sauna penetrates into your skin. Near-infrared light penetrates the skin’s outer layer, or the epidermis, boosting collagen, and ridding your body of toxins, dead cells, and bacteria.
Mid-infrared reaches into the skin’s soft tissue to heal inflammation and enhance blood circulation. Far-infrared is the longest wavelength in the spectrum. It penetrates deeper, providing a detox effect that flushes heavy metals and toxins from your body.
The intense heat of this full-spectrum sauna thoroughly cleanses your body from within.
Aside from the 10 heaters, this model features five far-infrared heaters. These are expertly arranged around the sauna cabin — under the bench, near your calves, and on the floor — for a holistic and optimal healing session.
While the wavelengths work their healing magic on your body, the Sun Home sauna impresses with its outdoor features. The unit is crafted from carbonized red cedar wood that ensures efficient heat insulation regardless of outdoor conditions. This means you can use your sauna all year, come rain or snow. The carbonized wood also ensures long-term durability in external conditions.
Another feature of this revolutionary sauna is its dura-glass exterior. Built in a panoramic style, you can enjoy uninterrupted outdoor vistas from your indoor perch. When installed in your backyard or garden, this sauna allows you to fully experience the benefits of nature-ensconced relaxation.
Other features of this sauna include:
-
Bluetooth connection with premium surround sound so you can listen to your favorite tunes during sauna sessions
-
Control panel accessible via a phone app, allowing you to alter temperatures with the touch of a button
-
Exterior LED lighting for atmospheric sauna sessions
-
Medical-grade chromotherapy for soothing light therapy
-
Safe EMF levels
It’s not surprising that this sauna was dubbed the “Best Outdoor Sauna in the World” by Sports Illustrated and the New York Post.
Methods for Building a Traditional Sauna
You have 3 options for building your sauna:
-
Total DIY - completed by gathering all materials on your own and building it from the ground up
-
Using an Existing Building - completed by taking a shed, garage, or log cabin that is no longer in use and turning it into the exterior of your sauna
-
Pre-Built Sauna - selecting a pre-built sauna with the required materials on hand and many parts already assembled

The Best Outdoor Traditional Saunas On the Market
Some of the top traditional outdoor sauna brands include Almost Heaven, Dundalk LesiureCraft, Thermory and Forever Saunas, due to their wide variety of sauna sizes that can fit any budget and space.
Barrel saunas are some of the most popular outdoor sauna shapes! That’s because their shape is easy to assemble, maintain and tends to be very heat-efficient.
Here are our recommendations for outdoor traditional saunas in a barrel shape:
-
The Almost Heaven Pinnacle 4-Person Standard Barrel Sauna is one of our most popular models! It is the perfect size for individuals, couples, and most small families.
-
The Dundalk Leisure Craft Panoramic View Barrel Sauna is another popular choice because of its unique bubble back window – perfect for gorgeous views!
-
Thermory and Forever Saunas (pictured above) feature barrel saunas made of thermally modified lumber. This feature makes them some of the most durable and long-lasting saunas on the market.
Recommendations for outdoor traditional saunas in other shapes:
-
The Almost Heaven Allegheny 6-Person Cabin Sauna looks like an actual cabin and even has a large front porch! It boasts multi-level seating inside, and despite its complex look (See image below) – it can be easily assembled by two people!
-
The Dundalk Leisure Craft Luna models are gorgeous with beveled siding and large open windows in the front. They come in 3 different sizes along with options for wood types, including clear cedar (no knots present) and knotty cedar (for a more “rustic” look).
-
Also by Dundalk is the very popular Mini-Pod traditional outdoor sauna. It features a sloping tear-drop shape and is quite spacious despite being named “mini” and can fit 4 to 6 people inside.

The Wood-Burning Stove & The Electric Stove
The three possible heating sources for a traditional saunas are a wood-burning stove, electric stove and gas-powered heater. Electric and wood-burning are the most common that you will find. Wood-burning stoves can provide a more realistic feel with the crackling wood fire, but electric stoves work wonders as well! They tend to be more convenient once they’re set up and offer the most customization, such as Wifi control. Regardless of which kind of sauna stove you choose, all three provide efficient heat to sauna stones.
Electric Heater Requirements
If you opt for an electric sauna stove, here is some helpful information for your electrician provided by Almost Heaven:
-
Your sauna heater needs 220 volts to operate correctly. They are responsible for making sure it is hard-wired to the electrical box
-
A 4.5 kw or 6 kw heater needs a 30-amp breaker and 10/2 wire.
-
Exception: If the heater is more than 30 feet away from the breaker, it needs a 8/2 wire.
-
If your sauna heater has 8 KWs, it needs a 8/2 wire, as well as a 40 amp breaker.
-
Be sure that your electrician places the wiring hole underneath your sauna heater.
-
If you are using a barrel sauna, the hole can go through the floor as long as it is below the heater.

Wood-Burning Heater Requirements
If you use a wood-burning stove, you need a chimney kit for your outdoor traditional sauna for it to safely operate.
When looking for the best logs to fuel your wood-burning outdoor sauna, you have two choices: hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and walnut, are perfect for fueling your sauna stove. They produce a long, slow burn. Softwoods, such as pine, cedar and fir, also work well but tend to have a faster burn.
Also, be sure to have sauna stones! Do not use regular everyday rocks which can explode under very hot environments. You need stones that will hold heat the right way.

Let customers speak for us

Good communication, easy delivery, easy set up, easy operation, great value. Recommended!

We ordered the 4 person barrel sauna and love it! We wanted a little extra space for the 2 of us/guests and it’s great. We could definitely fit 4 people in it if we needed. We use it every single day. It took about 10 weeks to get here because they build it specifically for the order. Putting the barrel together was fairly easy with 2 people. The electrical and the heater definitely required an electrician to install as we could have not done it alone.
We ordered the biggest heater (harvia spirit 8kw) and it heats up the sauna in about 15 mins inside our 40-50° garage. Overall this style of sauna is hotter and you sweat a lot faster than in an infrared sauna. I truly 10/10 recommend!
Pic is of us in the middle of building it.

Took me about 6 hours over 2 evenings to assemble almost all by myself. Had a pro run a new circuit from my panel. Very well made and assembly was straightforward. Heater is well sized and reaches operating temperature in under 30 minutes.

Great sauna very easy to assemble

The salt panel was a great addition to our Madison Sauna. It has excellent grain which is accented by the amazing color lights that glow through the panel. Also when you hit the rocks with a splash of water you can feel the heat bounce off the panel. Great addition if you are considering this option.

We can say enough about Sauna World there customer support is great! Our Pinnacle Sauna from Almost Heaven is epic.

The finish and quality is outstanding and it was quick and easy to assemble.

We are thrilled with our mini pod!! It came well shipped and our friend assembled it in 11 hours! Wow! We cannot wait to get healthy and sauna it up!

Beautiful sauna!!! Much easier than I expected to assemble, took a total of 4 hours. Can't wait to get warm by the pool on those cool evenings. Customer service was excellent..

Purchased a 2 person Almost Heaven barrel sauna and were delighted with the product. The order process was quick and easy, the sauna arrived on-time, installation was simple, following the provided instructions, and the sauna is extremely high quality. We’ve used it daily for over 2 weeks and quite frankly I don’t know how we lived without it. If I had it to do over again I wouldn’t change a thing... except maybe purchasing a 4 person model to easier share with friends!

Great Customer Service and a breeze to put together.Excellent shipping and the Sauna is top notch, couldn’t be happier
