Types of Outdoor Saunas
There are three main ways outdoor saunas differ from one another:
-
The heat source
-
The shape or style
-
The size
Understanding these differences will help you choose the right outdoor sauna for your space, climate, and usage preferences.
Heat Source
Outdoor saunas produce heat in one of two main ways: traditional heat or infrared heat. The heat source you choose will affect the installation requirements, electrical setup, and overall sauna experience.
Traditional Saunas
Traditional saunas heat the air inside the sauna using a heater and sauna stones. When water is poured over the hot stones, steam is created, raising the temperature and humidity inside the sauna and causing you to sweat.
Traditional outdoor saunas can be heated in two ways:
Wood-Burning Stove
-
Uses firewood to heat sauna stones
-
Does not require electricity
-
Requires a chimney and proper clearances
-
Creates a very traditional sauna experience
Electric Heater
-
Uses an electric heater to heat sauna stones
-
Heats faster than wood-burning heaters
-
Allows precise temperature control
-
Typically requires a dedicated 240V electrical connection
Electric heaters are the most common option in modern outdoor saunas because they are convenient and easy to control.
Infrared Saunas
Infrared saunas work differently than traditional saunas. Instead of heating the air, infrared heaters warm your body directly using radiant heat. The air temperature is lower, but you will still sweat because your body is being heated directly.
Infrared saunas are often chosen by people who prefer:
-
Lower operating temperatures
-
Energy efficiency
-
Shorter warm-up times
-
Daily use comfort
There are also outdoor infrared and hybrid saunas available that are specifically designed to withstand outdoor weather conditions.
Do Outdoor Saunas Need Electricity?
Many outdoor saunas require electricity, but not all.
-
Electric traditional saunas typically require a dedicated 240V circuit.
-
Wood-burning saunas do not require electricity but do require a chimney and proper installation.
-
Outdoor infrared saunas require electrical connections depending on the heater size and model.
Before installing an outdoor sauna, it’s important to:
-
Confirm your electrical panel has enough capacity
-
Check local permit requirements
-
Plan the heater location
-
Ensure safe outdoor-rated wiring is used
Electrical planning is one of the most important steps when installing a backyard sauna, so it’s best to confirm these details before purchasing a model.
What Base Do You Need for an Outdoor Sauna?
Outdoor saunas must be installed on a level, stable surface. Common foundation options include:
-
Concrete slab
-
Paver patio
-
Gravel base
-
Reinforced deck
-
Sauna-specific foundation pads
A proper base helps:
-
Prevent shifting
-
Improve drainage
-
Extend sauna lifespan
-
Ensure safe heater operation
Outdoor Sauna Styles
Outdoor saunas come in several common styles, and the best choice depends on your space, design preferences, and how you plan to use the sauna.
Barrel Saunas
Barrel saunas are one of the most popular outdoor sauna styles because their rounded shape naturally sheds rain and snow while promoting efficient heat circulation. They also heat up quickly due to their smaller interior air space.
Barrel saunas are ideal for:
-
Backyards
-
Patios
-
Lake houses
-
Cold climates
Cabin Saunas
Cabin saunas have a traditional square or rectangular shape and offer more interior space and bench layout options. They are available in both indoor and outdoor models and are often easier to insulate due to straight walls.
Cabin saunas are ideal for:
-
Larger groups
-
Changing rooms
-
Indoor installations
-
Year-round outdoor use
Cube Saunas
Cube-style saunas are a modern outdoor sauna design with a flat roof and contemporary appearance. Many feature large glass front walls and ergonomic bench layouts.
Cube saunas are ideal for:
-
Modern backyard designs
-
Scenic views
-
Patio installations
Outdoor Infrared & Hybrid Saunas
Outdoor infrared saunas and hybrid saunas combine modern heating technology with weather-resistant construction, allowing you to enjoy infrared heat therapy outdoors.
These are ideal for:
-
Lower temperature sauna sessions
-
Energy efficiency
-
Daily use
-
Outdoor wellness spaces
Outdoor Sauna Sizes
There is no one-size-fits-all outdoor sauna. The size you choose should depend on how many people will use the sauna and how much space you have available.
-
1–2 Person Sauna: Best for individuals or couples with limited space
-
3–4 Person Sauna: Most popular size for families
-
5–6 Person Sauna: Great for entertaining or larger families
-
6–8 Person Sauna: Ideal for social or commercial-style use
Choosing the right size helps improve energy efficiency and ensures you have enough room to use the sauna comfortably.
Why Thermowood Matters for Outdoor Saunas
Many premium outdoor saunas are built with thermally modified wood, often called thermowood. This material is specially heat-treated in a low-oxygen environment, which changes the wood at a cellular level and improves its performance outdoors.
For backyard saunas, thermowood offers several practical advantages:
-
Better dimensional stability in changing weather
-
Lower moisture absorption
-
Improved resistance to rot and pests
-
A rich, dark appearance that many homeowners prefer
Because outdoor saunas must handle rain, snow, humidity, and repeated heat cycles, thermowood is a popular upgrade for buyers who want durability and lower maintenance over time.

Outdoor Sauna vs Indoor Sauna
Both indoor and outdoor saunas offer the same core wellness benefits, but the right choice depends on your space, installation preferences, and lifestyle.
Outdoor saunas are ideal if you want to:
-
save indoor square footage
-
create a backyard wellness retreat
-
enjoy a more traditional sauna setting
-
install larger barrel, cabin, or cube models
Indoor saunas are often better if you want:
-
easier year-round access
-
a sauna integrated into a gym, bathroom, or wellness room
-
simpler protection from weather exposure
For many homeowners, the biggest advantage of an outdoor sauna is flexibility. Outdoor models come in more architectural styles and can turn a patio or backyard into a dedicated relaxation space.
Outdoor Sauna Maintenance Tips
A well-built outdoor sauna can last for decades, especially when it’s cleaned regularly and protected from unnecessary wear.
Here are the basics:
-
Use towels during sessions to reduce sweat buildup on benches
-
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris
-
Clean the interior with warm water and mild, chemical-free products
-
Inspect the exterior wood, roof, and door seals for weather-related wear
-
Check sauna stones, heater components, and vents periodically to ensure safe operation
For outdoor wood surfaces, a UV-protective stain or penetrating oil can help preserve the sauna’s appearance over time. Avoid using sealants or protectants inside the sauna, where high heat can cause unwanted fumes.
With simple routine care, your outdoor sauna can remain safe, attractive, and efficient for many years.
Outdoor Sauna FAQs
Do outdoor saunas work in winter?
Yes. Outdoor saunas are designed to operate in cold weather and often perform very well in winter because the temperature difference improves heat efficiency.
Do outdoor saunas need a roof?
Most outdoor saunas include a weatherproof roof, such as shingles or metal roofing, to protect the structure from rain and snow.
How long do outdoor saunas last?
With proper maintenance, a high-quality outdoor sauna can last 15–30 years or longer depending on materials and climate.
Can you put an outdoor sauna on a deck?
Yes, as long as the deck is structurally reinforced to support the weight of the sauna and occupants.
Are outdoor saunas expensive to run? Running costs depend on heater size, insulation, and usage frequency, but most home saunas cost only a few dollars per week to operate.
What is the best outdoor sauna for a backyard?
The best outdoor sauna depends on your space, climate, and how many people will use it. Barrel saunas are popular for smaller spaces, while cabin saunas are better for larger groups and changing rooms.
Choosing the Right Outdoor Sauna
The best outdoor sauna for your home depends on:
-
Available space
-
Electrical access
-
Preferred sauna type (traditional vs infrared)
-
Number of users
-
Climate and weather exposure
-
Budget and installation requirements
If you're planning a backyard sauna, it's worth comparing different styles and heater types before making a decision.

Let customers speak for us

Good communication, easy delivery, easy set up, easy operation, great value. Recommended!
We ordered the 4 person barrel sauna and love it! We wanted a little extra space for the 2 of us/guests and it’s great. We could definitely fit 4 people in it if we needed. We use it every single day. It took about 10 weeks to get here because they build it specifically for the order. Putting the barrel together was fairly easy with 2 people. The electrical and the heater definitely required an electrician to install as we could have not done it alone.
We ordered the biggest heater (harvia spirit 8kw) and it heats up the sauna in about 15 mins inside our 40-50° garage. Overall this style of sauna is hotter and you sweat a lot faster than in an infrared sauna. I truly 10/10 recommend!
Pic is of us in the middle of building it.
Took me about 6 hours over 2 evenings to assemble almost all by myself. Had a pro run a new circuit from my panel. Very well made and assembly was straightforward. Heater is well sized and reaches operating temperature in under 30 minutes.
Great sauna very easy to assemble
The salt panel was a great addition to our Madison Sauna. It has excellent grain which is accented by the amazing color lights that glow through the panel. Also when you hit the rocks with a splash of water you can feel the heat bounce off the panel. Great addition if you are considering this option.
We can say enough about Sauna World there customer support is great! Our Pinnacle Sauna from Almost Heaven is epic.
The finish and quality is outstanding and it was quick and easy to assemble.
We are thrilled with our mini pod!! It came well shipped and our friend assembled it in 11 hours! Wow! We cannot wait to get healthy and sauna it up!
Beautiful sauna!!! Much easier than I expected to assemble, took a total of 4 hours. Can't wait to get warm by the pool on those cool evenings. Customer service was excellent..
Purchased a 2 person Almost Heaven barrel sauna and were delighted with the product. The order process was quick and easy, the sauna arrived on-time, installation was simple, following the provided instructions, and the sauna is extremely high quality. We’ve used it daily for over 2 weeks and quite frankly I don’t know how we lived without it. If I had it to do over again I wouldn’t change a thing... except maybe purchasing a 4 person model to easier share with friends!
Great Customer Service and a breeze to put together.Excellent shipping and the Sauna is top notch, couldn’t be happier
